In this composition, I used sound as a storytelling medium in an effort to invoke a sense of fear. Drawing influence directly from John Cage's work entitled 4'33'', I utilized a combination of recorded sounds in order to build an abstract soundscape.
John Cage revolutionized the world of music through his innovative use of mundane objects and natural ambient noise as an alternative method of creating music. Although hardly ever taken seriously and in many cases even ridiculed, John Cage opened the door to the infinite possibilities of sound as a medium unconfined to the cultural and structural limitations of the music world.
It can be said that John Cage's artistic contributions are comparable to that of twentieth century artist Marcel Duchamp.
With John Cage's work in mind, I decided to take a darker more Halloween season appropriate approach to building my soundscape. I find that horror films are the genre of film that most often evoke its intended response on its audience therefore I naturally gravitated to this theme.
Through recorded sounds, vocal distortion, and an unsettling synthesizer I built an abstracted story of an individual's chase away from the impending doom of an approaching monster. With the use of repetition, I gave the sense of a looping nightmare as moments and repeat and regress in time.
