Remix Final Project

Elise Rosado

Everything Is Going To Be Alright is a remix video art piece inspired by the current and ongoing CoVID-19 pandemic.  At this moment in time, across the world, schools, businesses and places of gathering have closed down to aid in decreasing the spread of the coronavirus.  This has created a mass quarantine and self isolation movement  where the world has begun to normalize our separation from the external world as well as one another.  On a personal level, this pandemic has brought on feelings of panic, anxiety, fear, and uncertainty in what the future holds.  These emotional responses are what initially inspired the soundscape for Everything Is Going To Be Alright which began with a track I had previously created entitled “Ctrl+Alt+Del 2020.” “Ctrl+Alt+Del 2020” manifested into a cyclical and haunting auditory experience representative of my own internal dialogue around the crisis at hand.  Although a complete work in of itself, my sound piece brought on a lot of interesting visuals in my own mind that left me feeling like the track was disembodied.  I began by gathering a diverse array of found footage ranging from typical imagery associated with the pandemic such as toilet paper scarcity and sterile gloves.  As my research deepened, so did the kinds of imagery I was compiling for the video.  I utilized news footage, headlines, and even iPhone clips to expand the conversation into the greater American response to the crisis beyond my own.  To mirror the soundscape, looping clips and repetition became crucial in communicating the initial cyclical feels associated with the quarantine stemming from the days and weeks that have begun to blur together.  Additionally, I chose to keep the footage within a black and white color scheme to play into the ominous and nightmarish tone of the piece which was inspired by the infamous series The Twilight Zone.  Everything Is Going To Be Alright seeks to touch on the intersectional qualities of the crisis at hand through imagery depicting the mundane nature of self isolation, statistics on the unemployment crisis being created as a result as well as the interpersonal aggressions through anti-quarantine rallies and grocery store brawls.  Despite the tension that is present, the work is contrasted by a subtle and calm voice reassuring the viewer that everything is going to be alright.  Whether truly calming or simply unnerving, that is for the viewer to decide.
